Abstract

This paper presents a reflection about how 21st century Mexican youth need to explore and appropriate the concept of citizenship. The discussion starts by observing the scenarios where the concepts related to the needs and interests of the so-called “citizens” are exchanged, discussed and transformed. It is assumed that the formation of citizenship and the acceptance of its limits also occur in those – mainlly virtual – environments young people perceive as their own. This paper specifically reviews two categories, paramount to understand how contemporary Mexican youth perceive and live citizenship. The first one is communication-education as an element fostering transformative interaction as well as dialogue questioning the given world. The second lies in shared learning and living practices, a non-formal type of education allowing peer instruction through a sense of community
