Emancipated Voices: Technology, Identity, and Symbolic Power in the Short Story “Hablar bien”, by Valeria Canelas

Abstract

This article offers a theoretical reading of Valeria Canelas’s short story “Hablar bien” through an analytical framework that explores the intersections of technology, identity, symbolic power, and the human condition. Drawing on the conceptual contributions of Katherine Hayles (How We Became Posthuman), Donna Haraway (A Cyborg Manifesto), and John B. Thompson (Ideology and Modern Culture), the study examines how the experience of a migrant worker within a technologized corporate environment exposes the tensions between body, language, and symbolic domination. The narrative foregrounds the ideological function of a “voice prosthesis” that, by altering the protagonist’s perception and communication, redefines her agency and sense of self. The analysis argues that Canelas’s fiction operates as a critical laboratory in which the forms of subjectivity and power, characteristic of the posthuman era, are interrogated, revealing how literature can act as a site of resistance and theoretical reflection against the logic of technological rationality.
