Travel as an "experience of another nation" and travel narratives as its source

Abstract

This methodological and theoretical paper aims to explore two questions: in what ways does travel abroad enable "the experience of another nation"? And: how can travel narratives serve as a source for tracing this experience? The first part presents the concept of "experience" and its transfer and applications to studies of nation and nationalism. In the second part, it is proposed that individuals experience other nations when they travel to a foreign country, this phenomenon can be designated as "experience of another nation", and travel narratives serve as a suitable primary source for tracing this experience. Finally, examples are given of commonplaces commonly found in travel narratives in which this category can be traced. This part uses excerpts from a variety of travel narratives. The category "experience of another nation" facilitates our understanding of how an individual of a certain nationality, social class, and gender conceives the world at a given moment.
