The rebirth of Mayan textile culture among Guatemalan former refugees in Los Laureles, Campeche: body memory, identity and social representations in the loom of migration

Abstract

This article analyzes the reasons why Guatemalan Mayan textile culture reemerged in a Guatemalan refugee community after being disrupted by the Guatemalan Civil War. As a case study, it examines the situation of Guatemalan indigenous Mayan former refugees
settled in Los Laureles, Campeche, Mexico—a community founded by the Mexican state to house refugees—who continue to weave on backstrap looms and wear their
‘traditional’ clothing, without fully integrating into Campeche culture. Based on this phenomenon, and by analyzing the social representations constructed through sensory and emotional aspects that emerged during their relocation to Mexico and are linked to textile culture (such as ‘separating from the body’ and ‘recovering the body [through it]’), the relationship that the ex-refugees maintain
with this culture is explored. The analyzed data come from ethnographic fieldwork and are interpreted using the theory of social representations, in articulation with anthropological and sociological approaches focusing on sensory and emotional perceptions.
