Abstract

Gustavo de Jesús Caballero, S. J. was a Jesuit priest who conducted different scientific activities at the beginning of the twentieth century and published his research in three prominent scientific journals in Mexico City. The purpose of this article is to examine Caballero’s scientific inquiries around the three disciplines (mineralogy, geology, and chemistry) reflected in his publications between the years of 1902 and 1910. By studying Jesuit scientists, such as Caballero, this article expands the historiographical interpretations of science in Mexico, along with the different actors and research spaces that coexisted at the beginning of the twentieth century. The contributions of the present analysis include recognizing Caballero’s participation, as well as the role of the Society of Jesus as a whole, in the development of science in Mexico.
